The Green-Up Summer-Go-Green
As a subsidiary of Green Up 10,000, the Summer Go Green campaign proposes to plant more than 150 trees and sensitize a cross sections of the society. It is believe that by the end of the summer, the campaign would develop the capacities of at least 500 people. It will further sensitize youths about environmental conservation and tree planting, clean environment, and to establish tree nurseries in various parts of the country, that will enable the public to acquire free seedlings for fruits, amenity and Agro‐forestry.Significance Of The Campaign The project will contribute to improvement of livelihood and resilience to climatic change of Gambians through:
Increasing on the number of barriers to wind, which in turn reduce soil erosion, and destruction of crops and property by wind.
Improved livelihood through sale of fruits like Mangoes, Oranges, etc.
Contributing to climate stabilization thus reducing on the negative effects of climatechange that are culminating into global warming.
Increasing the number of shade trees especially in gazetted urban resting places such as green parks and recreation centres
Improving community knowledge and awareness of climatic change issues and supporting demonstration and adaptation practices that reduce the impact ofclimatic change on peoples livelihoods such as best practices in water protection andpreservation, soil fertility conservation, best energy production and conservationamong others.Project AreaThe project will cover various areas like schools, streets, local communities, rural andurban settlements within a period of the summer.Target PlantingMore than 150 seedlings will be planted over approximately across the regions thecampaign will be implemented, considering a spacing of 5m x 5m. These will include fruitspecies, ornamentals, agro‐forestry species etc.The Development ObjectiveTo generate, establish and maintain an efficient mechanism for sustainable environmentaland natural resources management at the National, District and community levels.
Project volunteers will meet members of the target community in their homes, public places, and in village council meetings, where they will be sensitized on the importance of growing trees.Climate Change Sensitization project will sensitize the participants about the realities of climate change and what can be done to mitigate and adapt to some of its impacts. It will enlighten the public about the significance of tree planting in curbing climate change.
Tree Nursery Establishment:Tree nurseries will be established in the four regions of The Gambia in which the project will be operating. Tree Nurseries will be strategically located in area of utmost convenience and accessibility to the target community.Involving Youth Organisations The Green Up Summer Go Green Campaign will seek for the participation of youth group and organisations across the region.
School Tour: The officials of the project will visit schools to meet students and sensitize them about the significance of planting trees in their schools and also providing seedlings for students to plant trees in their school environment through the Social and Environmental Studies Clubs.
.Social Media Tree Planting Challenge The project has developed a social media page to enable it to successfully implement thiscomponent. It involves challenging prolific social media users to plant trees in their homesand upload a picture of them planting a tree. This will be done through a hash tag called#GreenUp10,000 #WeAreGCM.WAYS
TO GET INVOLVE WITH THE SUMMER GO GREEN INITIATIVE
There is no gainsaying that Green-Up volunteers cannot do it alone. This necessitates the significance of your involvement in holding a ‘Summer-Go-Green’ event as part of your organisation's commitment to the environment. We hereby recommend and challenge your reputable organisation to plant at least ten (10) seedlings. Please do not forget to take a lot of pictures and selfies with the seedlings and post them on Facebook with the following hashtags #GreenUp #WeAreGCM #Name of your Organisation. Remember, the trees you will plant will go far enough in offsetting the global carbon emissions and thus curbing climate change.
SCOPE AND IMPLEMENTATION ACTIVITIES
Implementation of the project took course through a number of stages designed to ensure acceptance and effective implementation by the target community and youth groups that are involved. Community Sensitization: Project workers/Volunteers met members of the target community in their homes, public space (Bantaba), and in village council meetings, where they were sensitized on peculiar changes happening in their environment and continuing decline of agricultural produce and how planting trees for economic benefit can bring supplementary income to them in the near future. Information is also collected from the target community regarding the tree varieties of interest to the farmer..
Tree Nursery Establishment :
A tree nurseries was established in the North Bank region of The Gambia in which over 10,000 cashews were nursed. Involving Youth Organizations The Green-Up has engaged and established partnership with over 30 youth groups and organizations across the country. Organizations have all pledge the number of trees they want to plant and the project officials will provide them seedlings and experienced volunteers to help them successfully implement their sub-projects in their respective areas.
A total of 8 schools were visited to meet students and sensitize them about the significance of planting trees in their schools and also providing seedlings for students to plant trees in their school environment. The Social and Environmental Studies Clubs in schools have been the baseline while in school tours to train them and also encourage them to have Drams and short plays in school to keep the students more aware and enlightened.
Social media tree planting challenge:
The project has developed a social media accounts to enable it to successfully implement this component. it involves challenging prolific social media users to plant trees in their homes and upload a picture of them planting a tree. this will be done through a hash tag called #greenup10,000. influential individuals in the government and non-governmental organizations will be encouraged to take part in this challenge in order to motivate their followers to emulate.
