Monkey Park Restoration
Since 2016 we have been engaged in climate change mitigation and adaptation in rural villages - raising eco-consciousness in communities especially amongst young people. We focus on deforestation and land degradation, sustainable climate-smart farming practices, waste management and government accountability, protecting natural resources and tree planting. Now in 2020, we have mobilised nearly 500 volunteers and have presence in all administrative regions in The Gambia.
The project being proposed aims to address desertification while halting and reversing the trend of the urban loss and related environmental degradation in the region, and also promoting tree planting.
We stood against the construction of a conference centre in the Monkey Park, which was in the best interest of many species including the critically endangered western red colobus monkey.
Green Up Gambia’s 1 million trees campaign is directly linked to the African Union Great Green Wall Initiative - a movement with an epic ambition to grow an 8,000 km natural wonder across the entire width of Africa.
