Kemo Fatty

Founder Green-Up Gambia and  Executive Director Great Green Wall Frontline

Kemo Fatty embodies the essence of a passionate conservationist, driven by his commitment to realize the pan-African vision: The Great Green Wall Initiative. Presently holding the position of Head of Community Engagement at CIVIC, he wears multiple hats as the founder and director of Green-Up Gambia, an organization dedicated to safeguarding natural resources within The Gambia. In his role as the spokesperson for The Great Green Wall Frontline program, Kemo champions the vital concept that genuine initiative success demands active community ownership. This program, a collaborative effort to combat climate change, thrives on the contributions of local communities. Kemo is dedicated to unlocking the entrepreneurial spirit within these communities, unleashing the initiative's full potential on the ground. Green-Up Gambia, under Kemo's leadership, operates as a vigilant guardian of the environment. The organization ensures government accountability in protecting natural resources. Kemo's impactful interventions include the preservation of an ecotourism park and the monitoring of timber logging activities. His dedication has effectively steered meaningful change, contributing significantly to a more sustainable future. Kemo Fatty's unwavering devotion to his vision and his multi-faceted roles demonstrate his remarkable ability to bring about transformation on both regional and global scales. His work underscores the profound impact that an individual, fueled by passion and dedication, can have on shaping a more sustainable world.

 

Omar Malmo Sambou

Co-Founder Green Up Gambia

Dr. Omar Malmo Sambou is a highly regarded environmental scholar and advocate. With a Ph.D. (ABD), MSc, and BSc in Environmental Science/Natural Resources Management & Development, he brings extensive expertise to his roles as an accredited EIA expert, Sustainability Researcher, and Co-Founder of Green-Up Gambia. Dr. Sambou also serves as an Independent Consultant and a Lecturer at the University of The Gambia, where he inspires the next generation of environmental leaders.

 
 
 

Maimuna Jabbie

Executive Coordinator and Co-Lead Great Green Wall Frontline

Maimuna is a climate and STEM advocate from The Gambia, a BSc holder in Biology/Information Systems with over six years of experience working in the civil society and private sector. She is the current CoLead Director at Great Green Wall Frontline/Civic, where they are accelerating the African Union initiative to restore 8000km of degraded land and to finance enterprising models with communities to regain meaningful livelihoods in the Sahel. As one of the most well-known environmentalists in The Gambia, she has also been leading the team for Greenup Gambia, a national youth organization championing the battle against deforestation in The Gambia by promoting climate advocacy, tree planting, eco-education, establishment of seedling propagation centers 30 schools and botanical gardens across The Gambia, etc. She has contributed to the protection of the environment and preservation of the ecology for which she won the National Heroes Green Award in March 2022 and she represents The Gambia on international platforms notably at the United Nations Conference of Parties, West Africa Civil Society Institute, Emerging Valley and other platforms. The motives of her work go right to the root of sustainable development, as no country succeeds in any development plan in isolation of sustainable development.

 
Alfu

Alfu M. Sarr

Regional Program Officer

Alfu M. Sarr is an award winning Agroforester with more than 15 years experience in sustainable Cashew farming and Bee keeping for honey production and crops pollination. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Information Technology couple with Higher Diploma in sales and marketing management. He inspire, coach and mentor more than 100 youths in the feild of agriculture and entrepreneurship in General. He is currently the General manager of Agrotect, chairperson North Bank Region young entrepreneurs Association, Ambassador at GCCI start up chapter, Youth Mentor on Agribusiness at Africa Youth Entrepreneurship Academy and Regional program officer Green up and Let's Do It Gambia.

 
Ousainu

Ousainu Colley

Program Officer

Ousainu Colley known to many as OusainuGambia is a young committed youths who have passion for environmental protection and preservation since in his early childhood days. He studied wide range of course that includes Environmental studies to the tertiary institutions. With his commitment and dedication for environmental protection and preservation, he have been awarded by the UNDP in 2018 for his outstanding voluntary services for a clean and clean environment. He equally won the recent youth Excellent of the year Award as a way of recognizing his efforts in environmental protection and preservation. As the Program Officer of GreenUpGambia, he have been responsible in coordinating for the implementation of the activities of the organization.

Ansumana Camara

Program Officer II

By training Ansumana Camara is a forester specializing in Monitoring and Evaluation and also a trained teacher. He holds a National accredited certificate in forestry and wildlife management, High National Diploma in education secondary with a concentration in science and agricultural science and a Bachelor’s degree in Geography with physical geography concentration and Environmental Science minor. Ansumana works at the Department of Forestry of The Gambia under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources as Assistant M&E officer. He also teach Agroforestry module at the National School of Forestry (Kafuta) and Agriculture and Geography at Senior secondary school on a part-time basis.

Ebrima Jabai

Monitoring & Evaluation Officer

Ebrima Jabai is an environmentalist who is committed to the protection and development of the country's vulnerable environment. He is the Monitoring & evaluation Officer of Green-up Gambia and has been an instrumental figure in the organization's project implementations. 

Ebrima is also an entrepreneur. He is the General Manager of Royal Poultry Farm, a youth-led poultry farm that is devoted to contributing its quota in the country's strive towards attaining food self-sufficiency. 

As a Human Resource specialist by profession, Ebrima has earned himself a Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Development with 9 years ' professional work experience in administration and he is currently working as an Administrative Assistant with Gamhousing Real Estate Agency and has worked with different reputable institutions in the Gambia.

Isha Bittaye

Admin & Finance Officer

Isha Bittaye is a young hardworking woman, a Tax Sub-Officer and an environmental enthusiast. She is the Admin and Finance Officer of Green-Up Gambia. Isha handles the overall admin, keep financial records, updates and operates the Green-Up twitter Account. Being an environmental enthusiast has helped her a lot in terms of commitment, dedication and putting more effort in action on all activities. I love writing and learning. Getting to learn new things on a daily is fun. 

 

Muhammed Jammeh

National Coordinator

Muhammed Jammeh has a seven years’ experience in advocacy and youth development. His works focuses on capacitating young people and advocating issues regarding climate change and gender equality. He is the National Coordinator of Climate Watch- The Gambia (GREEN UP- Gambia). He equips young people with the right knowledge and tools to enable them become productive societal assets. He backs an Advanced Diploma in Management and Policy Analysis at Management Development Institute of The Gambia, a tertiary institution where he also served as the President of the Student’s Union Government in the year 2017-2018. He also served as the Finance Minister of the National Union of Gambia Students (NUGS). He is currently reading BA in Development Studies at the University of The Gambia. Muhammed’s passion for advocacy is borne by the timely need to young people to rise up to the occasion and take charge of their own future as goodwill agents and influencers. It is behind this drive that he implemented the YALI Africa4Her Project in May 2016 and was awarded as an Africa4HerChampion. He is also one of Barrack Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) fellows.

 
 

Ebrima A Cham

Project Manager

With a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Ebrima is passionately committed to environmental resource conservation.

In the role of Project Manager, Ebrima brings innovative strategies to combat climate change and promote sustainability within our community. Advocating for a shared responsibility, Ebrima fosters collaboration and community engagement, ensuring our impact is both significant and lasting.

Under Ebrima's leadership, the Climate Circles Project has achieved measurable success, from tree planting initiatives to reductions in carbon footprint. Ebrima's belief in the power of education drives empowering workshops and awareness campaigns, equipping communities for a sustainable future.

Facing challenges with resilience and innovation, Ebrima envisions a future where our environmental initiatives expand, initiate new projects, and contribute to a global movement for a more sustainable world

 

Arabiatou Jallow

Arabiatou Jallow is an environmentalist with a few years' worth of volunteer work experience with various CSOs in climate action and environmental protection, a bachelor’s degree in environmental science at the University of the Gambia, awarded the TAF Leadership Academy award, and SHE Climate fellow 2023, for the love she has for climate action she joined Greenup Gambia in 2021 as a volunteer and letter worked as the program associate for one year. She served on the environmental ministry committee of the University of the Gambia student union, she served as the welfare minister of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Student Association 14 executive council.

 

Abass F. Sonko

Abass F. Sonko is a highly accomplished professional with a diverse background in intelligence, diplomacy, national security, and conflict resolution. With over a decade of experience across various sectors, Abass demonstrates unwavering dedication to societal advancement.

His educational background includes postgraduate studies in Peace and Conflict Studies, coupled with technical expertise in computer programming, networking, and web design. Proficient in multiple languages and skilled in graphic design and media production, Abass's talents are multifaceted.

From humble beginnings as an Unqualified Teacher, Abass has excelled in roles at the Office of the President, the Gambia National Intelligence Agency, and as a General Manager. His expertise spans diplomacy, intelligence analysis, VIP protection, and web development.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Abass is actively involved in community service through organizations like Peace Gambia and Green up Gambia. His commitment to excellence and his ability to thrive under pressure make him an invaluable asset in any endeavor he undertakes.

 
 

Lamin Jeng

Chief Operations Officer Green Solutions

Lamin Jeng, also known as KARAFA, a dedicated Gambian artist and volunteer with Green-Up Gambia. Lamin's passion for combating climate change drives his active involvement in tree planting and advocacy against deforestation. Currently, he serves as a Ground Operation Specialist at Green Solutions, spearheading the production of biochar. Lamin has reached a significant milestone by developing the prototype of the first pyrolysis machine, which transforms waste materials like coconut shells, sawdust, leaves, and other discarded items into smokeless, long-lasting, and hotter-burning charcoal briquettes. His innovative approach to biochar production is making a meaningful impact on sustainable environmental practices in The Gambia.

 

Betty Bah

Fundraising

Betty Bah is an environmentalist who believes in the power of collective action to protect our planet. She is always looking for new ways to make a positive impact and encourage others to join the green movement. She was inspired by Green-up Gambia’s various initiatives such as planting trees, restoring habitats, and supporting environmental justice. Since 2021, she has been volunteering as a fundraiser, and through her outreach efforts she has raised awareness of the organization’s various programs and raised money to fulfill their financial needs.

 

Moritz Valentin Jejkal

Executive Assistant to the CEO

Moritz Valentin Jejkal serves as the Executive Assistant at Green Up Gambia, bringing a strong educational background in Forest and Environmental Sciences to the role. With a Bachelor's degree and a minor in International Forestry and climate change mitigation and adaptation, Moritz possesses a deep understanding of environmental issues and sustainable development practices. His academic journey includes research and papers on topics such as biochar and tree-based carbon sequestration. Moritz's practical experience through internships and his entrepreneurial venturefurther enhance his ability to contribute to Green Up Gambia's mission.

In his role as Executive Assistant, Moritz coordinates activities, manages projects, and ensures effective communication within the team. His dedication to sustainability and his multicultural experiences make him a valuable asset to the organization's efforts towards a greener future.

 
 

Momodou Cham

Chief Financial Officer

Momodou Cham, an experienced banker and financial analyst, holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics and a Master's degree in Business Administration. With a background deeply rooted in economics and finance, Momodu brings valuable insights and expertise to our Organization, particularly in financial analysis and strategic business planning. Allowing us to utilize funds effectively to ensure Green-Up can maximize its impact effectively.

 

Mbassey Manneh

Field officer

Mbassey, a human rights activist, now serves as a field officer on the frontline of the Great Green Wall initiative in The Gambia's north bank region. Her role involves empowering local communities to participate in reforestation efforts and promoting sustainable land management practices. With her background in activism, she brings advocacy skills to raise awareness about environmental and socio-economic benefits. Despite challenges, her work exemplifies the intersection of social justice and environmental sustainability, contributing to resilient communities and a sustainable future in the Sahel region.

 
 

Ebrima E. Kanteh

Ebrima E. Kanteh pursued his tertiary education at the Gambia College - School of Education, earning a Primary Teachers’ Certificate (PTC). After teaching briefly at Bundung Annex LBS, he returned to the Gambia College for an Advanced Diploma in Education, specializing in Social and Environmental Studies and Physical Health Education. Now teaching Social and Environmental Studies at Bakoteh Upper and Senior Secondary School, Ebrima is passionate about serving humanity and nature. He volunteers with Green-Up Gambia, rising to Coordinator of Volunteers, overseeing tree planting and ecosystem restoration initiatives. Additionally, he leads his community’s environment group, engaging in climate change education and organizing tree planting activities to combat deforestation.

 
 

Jacob Breit

International Development Coordinator

Jacob Breit is a proud Environmental Sustainability leader. Graduate Student at Harvard University in Global Development Practice and Global Health graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Jacob’s current work is focused on local to global community development in East and West Africa through the lens of clean water, nutrition, and education. Both Faculty at Koinadugu College in Sierra Leone and Development coordinator with Strides for Africa and Feeding Mouths, Filling Minds in Southern Wisconsin, Jacob stands at cross sections of academia and non-profit work. He embodies the spirit of Green Up Gambia. With his diverse background and unwavering dedication, Jacob is a great asset to our team and supports us to achieve meaningful change towards a greener, more equitable future.
