Coronavirus | COVID-19

The first cases of the coronavirus have arrived in The Gambia, and at Green Up we are taking this very seriously - it is our priority to learn from what we have witnessed from the news reports from around the world, and identify the measures that need to be taken to help protect ourselves - and especially the vulnerable who are most at risk: including the sick, pregnant, and elderly.

How does Coronavirus spread?

Coronavirus spreads when an infected person coughs small droplets packed with the virus into the air - and it is then breathed in. It is also easy to contract the infection if you touch a surface that droplets have landed on, and you then touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

How can you identify the symptoms?

Coronavirus infects the lungs. The symptoms start with a headache, fever and a sore throat - followed by a dry cough, which then often leads to breathing problems.

Am I safe if i’m not showing symptoms?

Feeling fine does not mean you can carry on as usual. The infected take at least five days on average to start showing symptoms. The World Health Organization announced that the incubation period is up to 14 days - during which time you will be infectious - with or without showing symptoms.

Social distancing in The Gambia

This means minimizing contact with people and maintaining a distance of at least six feet between you and others. Avoid public transportation, limit non-essential travel, work from home and skip gatherings. This strategy has saved hundereds of thousands of lives during flu pandemics from the last century.

How do I protect myself and others around me?

It’s OK to go outdoors. The point is not to remain indoors, but to avoid being in close contact with others. When you do leave your home, wipe down any surfaces you come into contact with, avoid touching your face and frequently wash your hands.

If you are living with someone who has a cough or a temperature you both MUST stay at home for a minimum of 14 days. We understand that for our community it can be very hard to keep a distance from others - depending on our work - or responsibilities towards members of our family. So please read this poster carefully to learn how to keep yourself and others as safe as possible.

The Gambian authorities are encouraging those showing symptoms to call a local helpline number on 1025, to receive the most up to date advice about your next steps.

Green-Up Gambia staff members and volunteers

We are taking the arrival of Coronavirus very seriously and feel responsible towards to protection of our staff as well as the wider community. We are moving our meetings over to virtual until the curfew has been lifted, and limiting community visits - aside from emergencies.

God bless, and stay safe.
